Esports remains one of the fastest-growing spectator sports on the planet, and the announcement of the first-ever “Olympic Esports Games” to be hosted in 2025 reflects this fact.
There are an estimated 2 million gamers across Ireland and 700,000 esports enthusiasts. This represents nearly one-quarter (22%) of Irish adults watching or participating in esports. The esports industry reaches over 500 million gamers worldwide and is worth over $1 billion, with many team revenues coming from sponsorship deals.
Comparatively, there are over 3.2 billion gamers worldwide, which is reflected in a global video games market – including video game sales – worth around $200bn. Both esports and gaming have become firmly established with a generation and will continue to influence social and cultural behaviour.
